Takeaways
- The Fortress 2.0 is the world‘s largest-capacity PHEV battery in mass production at 80 kWh, enabling over 400 km of pure electric range in D-segment plug-in hybrids.
- SVOLT’s global installed capacity reached 3.8 GWh in January–February 2026, a 24.9% year-on-year increase that made it the fastest-growing among the global top 10 battery makers, with its market share rising from 2.3% to 2.8% to rank eighth globally.
SVOLT Energy Technology started mass production of its ‘Fortress 2.0‘ plug-in hybrid battery pack at its Changzhou plant on 16 April 2026. With a rated capacity of 80 kWh, the pack is the largest-capacity PHEV battery currently in production, representing a 35.6% increase over the 59 kWh previous generation. The battery uses a highly integrated system design that improves volumetric efficiency and energy density by 6% compared to its predecessor. For D-segment PHEVs, the pack enables a pure electric range exceeding 400 kilometres under typical driving conditions, a figure that brings the category close to battery electric vehicle usability.
6C Fast Charging Adds 400+ km in Ten Minutes
The Fortress 2.0 supports peak 6C fast charging, enabling a 10% to 80% state-of-charge replenishment in approximately ten minutes, sufficient for more than 400 km of range recovery under ideal conditions. The system incorporates structural vibration resistance three times the national standard, side-impact protection twice the standard, and the ability to withstand 200 hours of water immersion without leakage. For thermal safety, nano-scale ceramic insulation materials are introduced, maintaining insulation for 30 minutes at 1,000°C. Smart fuses can cut high-voltage circuits within milliseconds in the event of electrical anomalies.
Stellantis Supply Link and Global Market Position
SVOLT has secured volume supply deals with Stellantis, VinFast, Spotlight Automotive, Great Wall Motor and Hyundai, with installed capacity continuing to expand across Europe and Southeast Asia. According to SNE Research data, SVOLT‘s global installed battery capacity reached 3.8 GWh in January–February 2026, a 24.9% year-on-year increase that made it the fastest-growing among the global top 10 battery makers. Its market share rose from 2.3% to 2.8%, ranking eighth globally. SVOLT expects the ‘large-capacity PHEV‘ segment to be the fastest-growing category between 2026 and 2028, and aims to gain a first-mover advantage in the high-end hybrid market. The first model equipped with the Fortress 2.0 will debut at the Beijing Auto Show later this month.
The open question is whether the Fortress 2.0‘s 400 km pure electric range, when integrated into Stellantis’ European PHEV product pipeline, will make Opel, Peugeot and Citroën models eligible for Germany‘s highest subsidy tier, and whether the distinction between PHEV and BEV will narrow to the point where regulatory classification becomes the main differentiator.
